Intermediate fly fishing

Our Level 2 River Skills Program is an intermediate fly fishing program based on the philosophy that only two things in fly fishing will catch fish; the fly rod and the fly. If this is true, then you should be an expert on flies, aquatic entomology and fly casting. That is the main focus in the Level 2 River Skills Program. This program consists of two phases beginning with phase one which includes a formal class (which is two sessions called Fly Fishing Entomology For Southwest Idaho) and two private sessions with your instructor covering entomology, flies and fly box organization. Phase two consists of perfecting the art of fly casting. Phase two casting is 4 to 5 (or even more) casting sessions with homework, for $250.

Our area offers the angler many challenging streams and rivers. Within these waters lives a diverse group of aquatic insects that our trout feed on. Learn what these insects are, their life cycles, the artificial flies that represent them and the strategies used by anglers to consistently catch trout. Fly fishing is the most cerebral form of fishing and understanding which flies to have in your fly box and which to use during an insect hatch is critical. This class takes an in-depth look at the water-breathing world and how trout interact in that environment. Fly Fishing Entomology for Southwest Idaho is a 2 session class.

Northwest School of Fly Fishing’s Advanced Fly Fishing Program is the next step in fly fishing.
Some new fly anglers have mastered all the practical concepts in fly fishing, but haven’t a good understanding on how to be successful on the water. Other fly anglers may have been fly fishing for a number of years and seem to be at a point where they’ve hit a wall. Then there are others that just seem to have been left behind. We at Northwest School of Fly Fishing understand this and have created what we believe is the best advanced fly fishing program in America. The Advanced Fly Fishing Program is 4 days long consisting of class room sessions lasting up to 2 hours. Then the last day is spent fly fishing on the Owyhee River with guides from Dream Cast Outfitters = learning new on=river skills and perfecting those skills learned in the classroom. Subjects and skills learned in the classroom are as follows:

drop shot

Drop Shot Nymphing is cutting edge fly fishing and this is the kind of fly fishing we like to teach and pass on to all fly anglers. Drop Shot Nymphing is uniquely American and is a very effective way to catch trout when nymphing. It's so effective that it is illegal to use is some rivers (none that I know of in Idaho). What we do here at Northwest School of Fly Fishing is we teach this method of nymphing but with a European flare. This technique coupled with short line nymphing techniques are very effective on the South Fork Boise River.
