August is called the Dog Days of August for a reason. The fly fishing can be slow on our valley rivers. However there are still hatches of aquatic Insects that trout will be feeding on for weeks to come. That is what August MikesFlyBox is all about. The Pink Albert is the most effective dry fly for the SF Boise River right now. The Pink Albert is a great all around May Fly for any river during the month of August and this month you will receive a Pink Albert emerger for those picky trout. Tricos (our smallest May Fly ) are in abundance during the month of August throughout the West but especially so on the Owyhee, Main Boise and Silver Creek. Trout love the spent spinner (dead May Fly) version of the Trico and you will see fish feeding on spent Tricos in the late morning to afternoon. And of course there is the Caddis. What can I say, you just can’t have enough Caddis patterns in your fly box. The Caddis emerges all summer long and they will take a good Caddis emerger pattern on every hatch. Why a Pheasant Tail nymph pattern? Well its simple, the un-beaded Pheasant Tail can be used as a generic emerger pattern for any May Fly during a hatch. Just simply fish the PT right behind the adult and see what happens. Folks have been using this fly for exactly that for a hundred years so why argue with success. Tight lines……………..
