Fly tying can be a great lifelong hobby for the active fly fisherman. There comes a time in every fly angler’s life when tying and catching trout on flies that you tied becomes important. At Northwest School of Fly Fishing we teach basic fly tying with the emphasis on tying flies that you will need to be successful. You will only tie flies that are successfully taking trout on our waters. Once the basics are learned you can return to the school for further instruction at no charge. This class is broken down into 3 two hour sessions; tying nymphs, emerger/midges and dry flies.

SESSION ONE

Most of what an active fly angler does on a tailwater is nymph fish. Having the right nymph in size and color makes all the difference. Tying nymphs, like tying any fly, is easy. It’s just that tying nymphs requires more steps. Most nymph or sub-surface aquatic insects that we tie are tied in the same way. The materials may change or there is an added step here and there. By just learning the basic steps a pheasant tail nymph will almost be tied the same as a hare’s ear nymph. If you know anything about the pheasant tail nymph and a hare’s ear nymph then you know they are two of the most important nymphs you can possibly have in your fly box. Learn how to tie these and many more.

SESSION TWO

Emergers and midges are critical components of your fly boxes. Trout will dine on midges all year, especially in the winter and the emerger is simply the most effective dry fly you can deploy during a hatch. Unfortunately it’s hard or impossible in many cases to find quality patterns outside of Northwest School of Fly Fishing anywhere in the Treasure Valley. Of all the flies you should have in your boxes these are priority one. Emergers and midges are the easiest fly patterns to tie and are the fastest to learn. Don’t be stuck with only what the shops have. Learn to tie your own effective patterns.

SESSION THREE

If you’ve heard the phrase “Match the Hatch” then that starts with having the right dry fly. Most dry fly patterns sold in the Treasure Valley are limited to the standard patterns. Learn to tie the most modern fly dry fly patterns available. Dry flies only require 3 or 4 steps to tie and most new tiers can learn to tie the dry fly quickly. Emphasis will be put on the correct size and proportions. Be a complete fly angler and learn to tie all the flies you will ever need to be an effective fly angler anywhere in America.
